According to the Oxford dictionary, media literacy is “the ability to critically analyze stories presented in the mass media and to determine their accuracy or credibility.”
Media literacy is an important thing to understand and practice, but how do we get it? There are some important factors that go into information and media literacy, and one of the most notable ones of these is fact checking things about the information that you have found. If you take every piece of information on the internet at face value, you are going to eventually absorb information that is factually incorrect. Some important things to consider when learning new information on the internet are: 1. Who is the author? 2. What is the goal of the writing? 3. Where is the information coming from? 4. Is this a trusted source? Far too many people take the information they see online at face value, so having these skills, and the healthy skepticism of media literacy, is key to learning the news in the modern digital age.
